Evaporator Plants
Evaporation is an Unit Operation used for the separation of the solvent(water) from a solution of a non-volatile solute (solids). In ZLD typically solvent is water and solute(solids) are mixed salts.
Types of Evaporators
1. Multi Effect Evaporator (MEE):
Evaporators can be made of one or more effects. In a multiple-effect evaporator, vapor from one calandria heats an effluent of second calandria at a lower boiling temperature and thus by adding more effects we can maximize the steam economy (It means with 1 Kg of steam we can evaporate many Kg of water). The first effect is heated directly by steam, and the additional calandria are arranged based on descending boiling temperature (or pressure).
MEE can comprise of Falling Film Evaporators, Forced Circulation Evaporators or combination of falling and forced both.
2. Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD):
Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) is usually used to achieve final liquid-solid(salt) separation in Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system. With the help of ATFD all dissolved impurities can be converted into salts and it’s a last operation of the ZLD.
3. Mechanical Vapor Recompression:
Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVRE) is an energy recovery operation which can be used to recycle waste heat (Latent Heat) to improve energy efficiency. The compressed vapor from MVRE is fed back to calandria to heat the further effluent and thus steam consumption can be reduced drastically.
